6. The “Swooping” Arch Recess Shelves

Arches are currently having a massive moment in interior design, providing a soft, feminine alternative to harsh right angles. If you have a small alcove or want to create the illusion of one, you can install arched-top shelves. This shape feels intentional and custom-built, instantly elevating the room’s architecture. It is an ideal spot to place an accent light or a piece of sculptural decor. Even if you don’t have an alcove, you can mount arched wood pieces above your shelves to mimic the look, adding a touch of Mediterranean softness to your bedroom walls.

How to Make

To create this look, you can either buy pre-made arched shelving or DIY the effect by cutting a piece of plywood into an arch shape and mounting it above your standard shelf. If installing into a recessed area, measure the inner width carefully. Install floating shelves at varying heights inside the recess. Paint the entire interior of the niche, including the shelves, in a soft, monochromatic color like beige or sage. Place a sculptural object, such as a bust or a uniquely shaped vase, in the center to emphasize the curve of the arch.
