9. The L-Zip Minimalist Wallet

Adding a zipper to a leather project can seem incredibly daunting to a beginner, but the L-zip wallet is the perfect, low-stress way to learn this valuable skill. This wallet consists of two outer leather panels joined by a zipper that runs along one side and across the top (forming an “L” shape). This design opens wide to reveal a spacious interior compartment for cards, coins, and folded cash.
The trick to a perfect L-zip wallet is using double-sided tape to position the zipper teeth evenly along the edge of the leather before sewing. This keeps the zipper from puckering or shifting during the stitching process. Once the zipper is taped down, you simply sew right through the leather and the zipper tape simultaneously. This project will teach you how to work with zippers, manage corner curves, and create a secure, fully enclosed wallet that prevents anything from slipping out.
