2. Modern Slatted Wood Planter

2

If your home features contemporary architecture or a modern farmhouse aesthetic, a traditional solid wood box might feel a bit too heavy or dated. A modern slatted wood planter offers a lighter, more architectural look by utilizing horizontal wooden slats with small gaps between them. This design plays with light and shadow, creating a dynamic, textured appearance that instantly modernizes your home’s exterior.

To create this look, build a simple inner support box out of exterior-grade plywood painted matte black. Then, attach thin slats of cedar, redwood, or pressure-treated pine horizontally across the front and sides of the box, leaving a uniform quarter-inch gap between each slat. The black background showing through the gaps creates a beautiful depth and contrast. Line the interior with a plastic planter insert to protect the wood from direct soil contact. Fill this modern box with architectural plants like ornamental grasses, structural succulents, or monochromatic white flowers for a clean, sophisticated look.
