6. Simple Mosaic Tile Planter

6

Add a splash of Mediterranean charm, artistic flair, and vibrant color to your home’s exterior with a DIY mosaic tile window box. This project allows you to express your personal style through patterns, colors, and textures, turning a simple planter box into a stunning, custom work of art that brightens up even the grayest rainy days.

Begin with a sturdy, rigid base box made of exterior-grade plywood or concrete backer board, as flexing can cause tiles to crack. Use exterior-grade thin-set mortar to adhere ceramic tiles, glass mosaic sheets, or even broken vintage plates to the front and sides of the box. Once the mortar has cured, apply an outdoor-rated grout to fill the spaces between the tiles. After the grout dries, seal the entire tiled surface with a penetrating grout sealer to protect it from moisture and frost. Complement the artistic, colorful nature of the mosaic with vibrant Mediterranean plants like trailing bougainvillea, red geraniums, and silver dichondra.
