Bathrooms are where clutter seems to multiply overnight. A fabric-lined rope basket on the counter or under the sink instantly tames toiletries, rolled washcloths, hair tools, or extra soap. The fabric liner adds a pop of pattern and protects delicate items from snagging on the rope fibers.

Materials: A pre-made or handmade small rope basket, half a yard of cotton fabric, fabric scissors, sewing machine or needle and thread, double-sided fabric tape (optional).

Instructions: Measure the inside diameter and depth of your basket. Cut a circle of fabric for the bottom by adding half an inch of seam allowance to the diameter. Cut a long rectangle for the sides, making it slightly taller than the basket so it folds over the rim. Sew the rectangle into a tube, then sew the circle to the bottom of the tube. Drop the liner into the basket and fold the top edge over the rim. If you’d rather skip the sewing, use double-sided fabric tape to hold the liner in place.

Time: 30 minutes for the liner, plus time to make the basket itself. Difficulty: Beginner.

Choose a waterproof or wipeable fabric for makeup brushes and damp items. A neutral linen-look fabric works in any bathroom, while a bold floral or stripe brings personality.
