4. Rope Basket with Leather Handles

Adding leather handles instantly elevates a humble rope basket into something that looks store-bought. This version works beautifully as a magazine holder next to the sofa, a planter cover, or a stylish catch-all in the entryway.
Materials: Coiled rope basket (your own or a plain one from the store), two leather belt strips or pre-cut leather handles, leather hole punch, brass rivets or strong fabric glue, awl or thick needle.
Instructions: Make a coiled rope basket following the method in idea #1, but stop about an inch short of the top. Decide where your handles will sit on opposite sides. Use an awl to poke two small holes through the rope wall at each handle spot. Slide a leather strip through each set of holes from the outside in, then back out through the second hole, forming a loop. Secure the ends with rivets or a heavy dab of fabric glue. Continue coiling one more row on top to hide the attachment points.
Time: 2 hours including the basket. Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate.
💡 Pro Tip: Real leather handles will patina beautifully over time. If you’re on a budget, faux leather strips from a craft store work just as well and come in tons of colors.
