6. A Custom Portrait of the Two of You

Commissioning a portrait sounds old-fashioned until you see one on a wall. A good portrait doesn’t need to look like a photograph. It needs to feel like a moment the artist saw in you and decided to keep.
Find an illustrator whose style matches her taste — soft watercolor, loose line drawing, painterly oil, graphic minimalism. Share a few reference photos and a short note about what you want captured: a quiet morning, a favorite trip, the first time you held hands, the day you moved in together.
Give the artist room to interpret. Some of the most loved portraits are the ones where the artist added a small detail only the two of you would recognize. Frame it in something that matches your home, or pick a frame after the piece arrives so you can choose one that fits the colors and scale.
Time: 3–8 weeks depending on artist waitlist
