4. Cozy Felt Applique Forest Scene

4

Felt applique is a wonderful technique for beginners because felt does not fray. This means you do not have to worry about finishing raw edges, making it incredibly easy to cut out precise shapes and stitch them directly onto your background fabric. This project focuses on building a cozy, layered forest scene using different shades of green, brown, and grey felt.

Start with a dark blue or charcoal grey fabric background stretched in your hoop to represent the night sky. Cut out simple pine tree silhouettes, mountains, and a crescent moon from your felt sheets. Arrange these shapes on your background fabric, layering the mountains in the back and the trees in the foreground to create depth. Use a simple running stitch or blanket stitch around the edges of the felt pieces to secure them to the background. You can then add tiny white French knots in the sky to represent stars. This tactile, multi-layered project is highly satisfying and adds a warm, cozy texture to any room.
