2. Miniature Wooden Garden Birdhouses

2

Introduce your children to the wonders of backyard nature with this charming miniature birdhouse craft. While these decorative structures are best suited for indoor display or sheltered porch areas, they provide a fantastic opportunity to discuss local bird species, nesting habits, and environmental stewardship. For this project, you will need approximately twenty to thirty wooden sticks, a strong craft glue or low-temperature hot glue gun (with adult supervision), acrylic paint in outdoor-inspired colors like forest green and sky blue, and natural twine for hanging.

Begin by constructing the walls of the birdhouse. Lay down seven or eight sticks side-by-side to form a flat square, then glue two support sticks horizontally across them to bind them together. Repeat this process to create four identical square panels for the front, back, and sides. Cut a small circular entryway into one of the panels using sturdy kitchen shears (an adult should perform this step). Assemble the four walls into a three-dimensional box shape and secure the corners with glue. For the roof, glue two flat stick panels together at a ninety-degree angle and mount them on top of the structure. Finish the birdhouse by gluing a small wooden peg or a short piece of twig just below the circular entrance to serve as a perch, and paint the exterior with cheerful patterns.
