4. Geometric Wall Hanging Planters

4

For older children looking for a modern, trendy craft that can actually be used to decorate their bedrooms, these geometric wall hanging planters are the perfect solution. This project introduces basic architectural concepts, balance, and structural integrity. You will need approximately forty standard wooden craft sticks, wood glue, metallic or pastel spray paint (applied by an adult in a well-ventilated area), a small piece of cardboard, and a lightweight faux succulent or air plant. The goal is to build a hexagonal or triangular pocket container that can hold a lightweight decorative plant.

To build a hexagonal planter, arrange six popsicle sticks on a flat surface in a perfect hexagon shape, overlapping the ends. Apply a small drop of wood glue to each overlapping corner. Once the first layer is set, continue stacking and gluing sticks directly on top of the previous layer, building the walls upward until the structure is about two inches deep. Cut a piece of cardboard to match the shape of the back of the hexagon, and glue it securely to the rear of the wooden structure to form a solid backing. Once the glue is completely dry, paint the entire planter in a stylish color, like metallic gold or matte white. Place a small bunch of faux greenery or a lightweight air plant inside the pocket, and hang your new modern wall art using a small nail or an adhesive hook.
