5. Functional Desktop Pencil Holders

Help your children organize their homework stations, art desks, or vanity tables with a highly functional, custom-designed desktop pencil holder. This project is excellent for teaching kids about recycling and repurposing materials, as it utilizes an empty, clean aluminum can or a cardboard toilet paper roll as the structural core. In addition to the recycled container, you will need about twenty-five standard popsicle sticks, colorful yarn, acrylic paint, double-sided tape, or craft glue, and decorative ribbon.
Start by thoroughly cleaning and drying an empty metal soup can, ensuring there are no sharp edges along the rim. Wrap a piece of double-sided tape or apply a generous layer of craft glue around the entire outer circumference of the can. Press the wooden sticks vertically onto the adhesive, placing them side-by-side until the entire metal surface is completely covered. Once the sticks are locked in place, kids can paint the exterior with stripes, polka dots, or geometric patterns. For an extra touch of texture and color, wrap vibrant embroidery floss or colorful yarn around the middle of the holder, securing the ends with a dab of glue. Fill the finished container with colored pencils, markers, paintbrushes, or scissors to keep the workspace neat and tidy.
