3. Fondant Shape Toppers

If you want your cupcakes to look like they came straight from a professional bakery, fondant toppers are a smart move. They sit on the frosting like edible sculpture, and they can match any theme you can imagine, from dinosaurs to daisies to initials.

You’ll need a small block of rolled fondant in your chosen color, a tiny amount of cornstarch for dusting, a rolling pin, mini cookie cutters, and a small offset spatula. Dust your work surface lightly with cornstarch, then roll the fondant out to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out shapes with your mini cookie cutters, gently lift each one with the spatula, and set them on parchment paper to firm up for at least an hour.

Once they’re dry to the touch, you can either place them directly on frosted cupcakes or attach them to toothpicks with a tiny dab of melted chocolate. Hearts, stars, moons, and animals all work wonderfully.

Plan about 30 to 45 minutes for a batch of 12 to 15 toppers, plus resting time. Difficulty is moderate, mostly because fondant can be temperamental in humid kitchens. If your fondant is sticking, dust a little more cornstarch. If it’s cracking, knead in a tiny drop of vegetable shortening.

For a fun twist, mix two fondant colors together to create a marbled effect. Budget is around eight to ten dollars for enough fondant to make 30+ toppers, which is significantly cheaper than buying decorated cupcakes from a bakery.

💡 Pro Tip: Make fondant toppers a day ahead. They hold their shape better after sitting overnight at room temperature, and you’ll save yourself party-day stress.
