5. Mini Banner Toppers

Mini banners strung across a single toothpick are cheerful, customizable, and ideal for sharing a name, age, or short message on top of each cupcake. They read clearly from a distance and add a homemade, intentional touch to the dessert table.
Cut small triangles or rectangles from patterned scrapbook paper, about 1 inch tall. Punch two tiny holes near the top of each, then thread twine, baker’s twine, or thin ribbon through. Tie the banner between two toothpicks, leaving about 1.5 inches of slack so the banner droops naturally. A drop of hot glue on each knot keeps everything secure.
For a cohesive look, use the same paper collection across the whole batch. For a playful look, mix patterns in the same color family. If you want to add words, write them on the banner pieces with a fine-tip marker before stringing them up.
This project takes roughly 10 minutes per topper once you have your pieces cut. For a full batch of 12, plan about 2 hours, or invite a friend over to help and cut that time in half. Difficulty is easy to moderate, mostly because threading tiny holes requires a little patience.
Budget-wise, this idea costs around six to eight dollars for enough materials to make 20+ toppers, especially if you use paper scraps from other projects.
